I recently had the pleasure of doing business with Kim from www.myworldsastage.com. She is so pleasant to work with. And she is amazingly creative. Her web site is mainly geared toward digital files for downloading and using on embroidery machines. Who knew you could do that?
Kim was sweet enough to answer a few of my questions.
How did you get started embroidering?Sometime around 2000 I bought my first embroidery machine. I had no idea at the time that there was software available to create my own designs, but once I discovered it, I became addicted to digitizing and have been doing it ever since.
Do you have any particular inspirations?Yes! I am inspired by theatre and history. I work as a volunteer and a board member for a professional theatre. Because most of our productions are Shakespeare's plays, I get to see some fantastic costumes up close. Those amazing costumes inspired me to create embroidery designs that would mirror those I saw at the theatre. Since I cannot draw, I use royalty-free clipart as a starting point for getting the silhouette right.
How did you find Etsy? How long have you been selling on Etsy?I found Etsy accidently while searching online for something completely unrelated! Then I encountered an Etsy info booth while attending an outdoor indie craft fair and decided that I'd try it out. I've been on Etsy just over a year now. I do not sell my digital embroidery files there (I sell the electronic files on my own website). Instead I sell craft items I've made using my embroidery.
Are you working on any new projects now? I keep very busy! Right now I have several projects going on: I'm stitching what I call a Retro Gossip Girl cosmetic bag; some embroidered pillows; and at the same time I'm working on a full-length video project for the theatre company.
What is your favorite all time piece? My favorite piece is a purse I made from one of my Sfumato Embroidery designs. Sfumato Embroidery is a "picture-stitch" software that allows me to create an embroidery from a photograph. I find Sfumato to be fairly difficult, so when this design came out as well as it did, I was so happy with it that I decided never to sell it because I want to always have it near to look at and touch!
How do you promote your work?I Twitter; I'm on Facebook; I've run both Google and Yahoo advertisements for my main site; I write about my crafts (and other projects) in my blog (http://myworldsastage.blogspot.com), and I've been lucky enough to have great word-of-mouth referrals.
Tell us more!I sell digital embroidery files from my website (www.myworldsastage.com). From that site you can also see my Etsy items and any eBay items I may be running at the time. A one-stop shop for all the things I sell! Plus there's a photo gallery of things I've made through the years. Soon I'll be putting up photos that my customers have sent me showing how they've used my designs!
One of my favorite things from Kim's etsy store is this awesome
strawberry wristlet. She made it out of a vintage tie, TOO CUTE!
